Favorite Feature: Delicious food served fast.
In the middle of the culinary wasteland that is Southeastern Connecticut, Chester’s Barbecue shines like brand new spur on the back of a cowboy boot. With a menu boasting a good variety of meats and enough sides for any vegetarians visitors to enjoy a meal or two, this is the place to be when you are feeling like some good barbecued meats.
The restaurant itself is located in the Big Y shopping center in Groton, nestled into the corner by Lee’s Toy and Hobby. There is plenty of parking and an entrance in the front and on the back side of the store. Once inside, you will find the counter where you can see the menu and order your food. Found and bottles drinks are available and when we visited there was also a list of specials. When your meal is ready, someone will bring it to your table (at least in our experience). We were given a number as well, so perhaps at busier times you would have to listen for your order number and pick it up at the counter.
There are two dining areas, both full of booths and tables. I found a couple of high chairs and booster seats for the littlest diners, but you could easily sit a toddler on the inner part of the booth if you needed to. The booths can also come in handy if you need to change a diaper since there is no changing area in the bathroom – although there is a small table in there that may be usable if you are feeling brave.
The meat itself is dry-rubbed, so it is served without sauce on it. You can choose between spicy and sweet and serve yourself. There are a variety of hot sauces and vinegar available to compliment your meal. Wet naps were also found near the sauce, important to note in case your kid starts trying to eat the food all by themselves. I found the spicy to be very flavorful and not hot at all. As for sides, kids love the macaroni and cheese, sweet corn bread and baked beans.
Chester’s is open daily from 11-9 and has a lunch menu available Mon-Fri. The full menu is available online including their “Party Packs” if you need to feed a crowd. We can’t wait to go back.
